Belkin WeMo Home Automation Switch

Ok, I’m a geek, and the more things I can control from my phone the better. Well, that’s one reason I bought the Wemo switch, the other, when I sit down to watch a film, I tend to pour a glass of wine, recline in my chair, then realise I forgot to kill the lamp so I can get engrossed in the movie, with this device I simply pick up my phone, the kill the lights and enjoy the film…..ok, I’m a lazy geek. The WeMo has a very simple setup process, simply plug it into the wall, install the … Continue reading Belkin WeMo Home Automation Switch

Apple iMac (Late 2013 Model)

I’ve had my current iMac now for a good fours years and it’s still going strong, however after catching a glimpse of the newer thinner model in the Apple store, I decided it was time to upgrade. One of the deciding factors was that back in 2009 when I made the switch to Mac, games weren’t really a thing, and I planned to stick to the consoles for my gaming needs. Over the years, steam has come to the Mac, and with the SteamOS being Linux based, the assumption is, if developers are developing for Linux, a Mac port … Continue reading Apple iMac (Late 2013 Model)

Apple iPad Air

My old trusty iPad 2 was starting to get a little long in the tooth. It was fine for browsing and most apps, but compared to C’s iPad 4, it was noticeably slower, and the lack or retina screen made me want to upgrade. Due to the ‘No New Shiny for a Year Challenge‘ I wasn’t able to pick up an iPad 4 when C did, so I’ve been looking in envy for the last 12 months. So the October Apple media event happened, and as expected a higher specced version of the iPad was announce, and I was instantly … Continue reading Apple iPad Air

iPhone 5

Having been able to resist the iPhone 4S last year, I decided to take the plunge and get the iPhone 5. It seems Apple are releasing a ‘major design change’ version every 2 years, and just a tweaked version with only minor speed bumps and features, e.g….faster chip…Siri on the years in between. Now I know by now you’re sick of reading blogs about to iPhone 5, so I’ll try and keep this more focused on my personal feeling on upgrading from an iPhone 4. The most noticeable new feature is the screen, now I know they’ve only stretched it … Continue reading iPhone 5

Apple to dominate the streaming world?

Before you read, this isn’t based on any official news, just my speculation. Over the past couple of years in the UK, more and more steaming companies have been popping up and as  internet speeds rise in the UK, it’s becoming more practical for the like of BBC, ITV, Channel4, Channel5 and various other terrestrial providers to offer a steaming service. Youtube now host many TV programs and films, and it won’t be long until they offer a monthly set fee subscription model. Personally I cancelled my Sky ‘normal TV’ subscription over a year ago now, and have been fed … Continue reading Apple to dominate the streaming world?

Garden Sound System

With the sun coming out a couple of weeks ago, I decided I needed to finally complete a project I’ve had in my head for some time now. When the sun comes out, I seem to make the most of it, I get out the best pressure washer I’ve ever had and spray down the porch, pop up the parasol, get out the recliner, turn on the radio in the kitchen, open a window so I can actually hear the radio, pop and bottle of wine….and relax. Occasionally instead of using the radio in the kitchen, I sometime take Philips … Continue reading Garden Sound System

Apple TV 3rd Generation

Like many I sat and watched live streams of the iPad 3 media event on the 7th March 2012, and sat at drooled at the new shiny. In addition to the iPad 3 being launched there was the announcement of the 3rd generation Apple TV. It’s selling features at the event was a new shiny UI and the ability to output 1080 video (instead of the 720 from the 2nd generation) Although the 1080 did sound appealing, I spend the best part of a month encoding all my media to 720, and didn’t plan on re-encoding all the blurays to … Continue reading Apple TV 3rd Generation

Philips Fidelio DS3020/05

I’ve been looking for some kind of portable iPhone dock for a while now. I currently have the ability to charge my phone in most rooms either by docking it in an alarm clock, or in the front of a TV, or just by putting it in the dock connected to my mac. The only problem with the ones I have is, a, they aren’t portable, and b, the sound quality isn’t that great. So….I was in Currys last night at this one caught my eye, as it had a sticker on the box saying “iPhone 4 Bumper compatible”. All … Continue reading Philips Fidelio DS3020/05

Apple iPad 2

As you know, I already have the original iPad, or should I say, I had the original iPad (C is now the proud owner of a shiny, carefully used, original iPad). I decided that due to my iPad 2 shipping early (the 9th, and not the 15th that they originally stated), and C was working away for a week, I could survive a couple of days without the iPad and handed it over on Friday night. To be honest, you don’t realise how dependant you become on tech, I felt like I’d lost a limb…..that was until today when my iPad … Continue reading Apple iPad 2

Razer DeathAdder 3.5G Mouse

Last year when I bought the iMac, I made the decision that it wasn’t a gaming platform, and I would use the consoles for my gaming needs. Since then Steam has come to the Mac, and with the Mac App Store providing the likes of COD4, Bioshock and Borderlands, it looks like I may have to rethink. Although I am a major Apple fan boy, the Apple Magic Mouse is good, but no good for gaming. Don’t get me wrong the precision is good, but the touch sensitive top…not so good. I recently started playing Minecraft, and found it extremely … Continue reading Razer DeathAdder 3.5G Mouse
